A pelvic floor physical therapist is a specialized provider who has advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of the pelvic floor within a larger body system. Pelvic floor physical therapists are highly specialized providers who evaluate and treat the following conditions: bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, birth and pregnancy related dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.

Your pelvic floor physical therapist will begin by taking a comprehensive medical history and discussing your symptoms in detail. You will receive an educational overview of the pelvic floor anatomy and its connection to your symptoms. Following this discussion, an evaluation will be conducted, which may include observing your breathing patterns, assessing spinal and hip mobility, examining foot and ankle mobility, and performing a functional movement screening. With your consent, your physical therapist may recommend an external and/or internal pelvic floor muscle assessment to gain a deeper understanding of how the pelvic floor may be contributing to your symptoms. Together, you and your therapist will develop a personalized plan of care tailored to your specific goals and needs.

As of 9/1/2025, patents can see a PT in Texas for evaluation and treatment for up to 30 calendar days before needing a PT referral.
